  Killing of an extraordinary gentleman

It is a bitter truth to accept that cricket fever overshadowed our national sport Hockey. The most controversial truth is that cricket is killing other sports in India. The government has to appear broad-based and fair to all sports, and yet we know that is fiction. Some feel that Cricket in India is becoming an obstacle in the progress of other sports.

“M.S. Gill, the sports minister of the country said, “Television, commercialization and the advertising world have promoted cricket which is badly affecting other sports in the county.””

It is common in our country to see children playing cricket with the perfect rule in grounds, streets. If they are questioned about other games and their rules, it is quite difficult for them to answer. The reason is simple they don’t know about other games and they don’t care about them. Even if a small kid is asked about their favourite player, the answer would be Sachin or Dhoni and not Sushil Kumar, Dayanand Chand.

Many young players in sports like shooting, lifting, etc. cannot continue their passion due to lack of governmental aid provided to them. This fails them to achieve at the International level, which is not in the case of cricket. The scarcity of proper grounds, equipments and lack of interest shown in schools, colleges made many to feel insecure in their passion towards sports.

In 2012, a young girl Aishwarya Parashar became quite famous for the RTI queries she had filled. One of her query is about India’s national game. The response by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports made an entire nation in a shock, which is India does not have any national game as no game has been considered to be India’s signature game.

Sports apart from cricket are not considered as a career option, which must be changed and start considering other games as a serious career. By bringing improvement in the Physical Education Department in schools, colleges may change the attitude of people.

India is a pool of immense talents. Our ancient games like Kabbadi, Wrestling is played mostly in rural places in our country. Talent hunt must be conducted regularly by the ministry to bring some new talents. These new talents may show the true potential of our country to other nations.
